Appel à communication : Newberry Seminar in European Art, date limite le 15 juin 2020
The Center for Renaissance Studies is pleased to welcome proposals for the 2020-2021 Newberry Seminar in European Art. Focused on the history of European art, from its origins through the nineteenth century, this seminar provides a forum for presenting current research, as well as a venue to bring together a diverse community of art historians for intellectual exchange, collegial conversation, and debate. We construe art history in broad terms, embracing painting, sculpture, graphic art, architecture, caricature, manuscript illumination, book arts, and material culture. Each year we invite papers that cross and challenge borders both within and outside the discipline; engage questions of methodology and ideology; examine dynamics between form and content; probe the categories of race, ethnicity, status, and gender; and reflect critically on the state and outlook of the field. Papers are pre-circulated, enabling the seminar to be devoted to discussion.
The coordinators for the Seminar in European Art are: Suzanne Karr Schmidt, Newberry Library; Lia Markey, Newberry Library; and Walter Melion, Emory University.
The European Art Seminar Call for Proposals for 2020-2021 seminars is now OPEN. Proposals are due Monday, June 15, 2020. We encourage papers that draw upon the Newberry collection. In addition to a classroom seminar format, presenters may request a hands-on workshop with original materials from the collection; please indicate interest in this option in your proposal.
To submit a proposal, visit our webform and upload a one-page proposal, a statement explaining the relationship of the paper to your other work, and a brief CV. Scholars whose papers are selected may apply for a travel subsidy of up to $450. The Newberry is unable to provide additional funds for travel or lodging, but can assist in locating discounted accommodations. Dates for the 2020-2021 seminar have not yet been chosen but the seminar will meet from 2-5 pm on four Fridays during the academic year. Please indicate in the application periods of the year when you would be most interested in presenting in the seminar.
We are hopeful that Newberry Scholarly Seminars will be able to convene regularly in both the Fall and the Spring of AY 2020-2021. Due to the uncertainty caused by COVID-19, some seminars may be postponed or held online. Please consult our website regularly for up-to-date information.
