Appel à contribution : « Artists and Craftsmen: Multidisciplinary Approaches in the Analysis of the Production of Medieval Wall Paintings », Rome, Sapienza Università di Roma, 28-31 août 2024, date limite le 8 février 2024

30th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA), Rome, Italy, 28-31 August 2024. Session no. and Title: 787 Artists and Craftsmen: Multidisciplinary Approaches in the Analysis of the Production of Medieval Wall Paintings
Organizers: Patrick Cassitti, Giulia Bordi, Giovanni Cavallo

We invite researchers to contribute to a session on the multidisciplinary examination of medieval wall paintings at the upcoming 30th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists in Rome, Italy, 28–31 August 2024. This session addresses research groups working in the field of mural painting research. It aims to explore the opportunities and challenges offered by collaborative efforts in this field and provides a venue for the presentation of innovative methodologies and technologies. The organizers hope that this will encourage a deeper understanding of the cultural, artistic and historical significance of wall paintings in the medieval period. For the purpose of this session, the “long” definition of the medieval period is applied, in order to accommodate relevant contributions on late antique or early modern wall paintings. We encourage the submission of papers that present integrative and interdisciplinary approaches to the analysis of these historical artifacts.

Key Topics for Submission Include:

  • New methodologies for the integrated study of wall paintings.
  • Invasive and non-invasive analysis of wall paintings.
  • Advances in methods of dating wall paintings.
  • Characterization of materials and provenance studies of painting materials.
  • Technology of production of artificial pigments.
  • New systems for mapping and documenting wall paintings.
  • Comparative analyses of wall paintings in different regions and periods.
  • Opportunities and challenges of interdisciplinary collaborations in research on wall paintings.

We invite presenters to submit abstracts before 8 February 2024 through the EAA conference platform at submissions.e-a-a.org/eaa2024/. Abstracts should clearly outline the research question, methodology, and key findings and align with the session’s interdisciplinary theme. Submissions by research groups are particularly welcome. For further details and inquiries, please reach out to the organizers via patrick.cassitti@muestair.ch Please refer to the official EAA conference website  for updated submission deadlines and guidelines.
