Appel à contribution : “Gypsies in Renaissance Europe”, RSA, date limite le 26 juillet 2025
Type : Paper Panel
Session Abstract (Max. 300 words) : This panel invites papers that explore a range of interdisciplinary topics dealing with experiences, impressions, and interactions with early modern gypsies (gitanos, Sinti, Roma, travelers, etc.). Much of the perception of early modern gypsies is that they left few written records of their own, and that most of what we know about them comes from secondary literary and legal sources. In fact, in some parts of Europe, gypsies were active participants in legal venues, creating notarial and legal records of their own, documenting their own voices and cultural production. This panel seeks to uncover some of these overlooked sources of gypsy experience. Proposals from scholars in history, literature, religious studies, music, art history, and related fields are welcome.
Papers exploring gypsies in Spain as well as other parts of Europe and the Atlantic world are welcome. Topics of interest may include but are not limited to:
• Crime and criminal sentencing (Inquisition, galleys, regional jurisdictions, etc.)
• Families, women, and children, including separation via criminal sentencing and exile
• Literary portrayals of the Caló language (or other dialects)
• Artistic, theatrical, and literary depictions
• Religious culture
• Weddings, baptisms, funerals
• Games, sport, fairs
• Law and legal directives against settlement/ experiences of settled gypsies
• Military service, including in the Atlantic
• Legal (and notarial) literacy by gypsies in court settings, including testamentary practices
